Hanoi, June 16, 2026, Vietnam Airlines officially inaugurated its nonstop service between Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) and Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) on June 16, 2026, making it the first direct air connection ever established between Vietnam and the Netherlands.
Inaugural flight VN83 departed Noi Bai at 3:50 AM local time, carrying approximately 300 passengers aboard an Airbus A350 wide-body aircraft. After a flight time of 12 hours and 10 minutes, the aircraft landed at Amsterdam Schiphol, completing what is now the shortest possible journey between the two countries.

2. Why is this route a game-changer for European travelers?
The Hanoi–Amsterdam route is Vietnam Airlines’ 12th direct European destination, joining an existing network that includes Paris (CDG), Frankfurt (FRA), London (LHR), Munich (MUC), Milan (MXP), Copenhagen (CPH), and Moscow (SVO).
For travel agents and tour operators in the Netherlands and broader Western Europe, the route removes the most significant structural barrier to selling Vietnam as a long-haul destination: the mandatory transit. Previously, all passengers between Amsterdam and Vietnam had to connect through a third hub: Dubai, Doha, Istanbul, or Singapore, adding 4 to 8 hours to each direction of travel.
The bilateral travel corridor has been growing rapidly. Passenger traffic between Vietnam and the Netherlands exceeded 122,000 in 2024, with demand growing more than 40% year-on-year through 2025. The approximately 27,000 Vietnamese nationals residing in the Netherlands represent an additional VFR (visiting friends and relatives) segment with consistent year-round travel demand.

3. Onward domestic connections from Hanoi
Vietnam Airlines has scheduled the Amsterdam service to connect with its domestic network at Noi Bai International Airport. Passengers arriving in Hanoi from Amsterdam can connect onward without changing airlines to the following:
- Ho Chi Minh City (SGN): southern gateway, Mekong Delta access
- Da Nang (DAD): central Vietnam, closest airport to Hoi An and Hue
- Nha Trang (CXR): beach and resort destination on the South China Sea
- Phu Quoc (PQC): Vietnam’s premier island resort destination
This makes a north-to-south touring itinerary such as arriving in Hanoi and departing from Ho Chi Minh City entirely practical for European FIT and group travelers without any international transit.
4. Visa position for Dutch citizens
Dutch citizens currently benefit from 45-day visa-free entry to Vietnam for tourism and short-stay business purposes, under Vietnam’s Resolution 229/NQ-CP (effective August 15, 2025 through August 14, 2028). No prior visa application is required for stays within this window.
