Traditional Cultural Shows and Performances in Vietnam and Cambodia

Water Puppet Show

Water puppetry dates back to the 11th century and originated in villages of the Red River Delta in Northern Vietnam. During seasonal flooding, villagers created this art form to entertain one another in submerged rice fields.

The wooden puppets are carefully carved and lacquered, then performed in a waist-deep water pool. Puppeteers, hidden behind a bamboo screen, manipulate the puppets using long bamboo rods beneath the water’s surface.

Each performance is selected from a repertoire of over 400 traditional folk stories. Live music is provided by a traditional Vietnamese orchestra, accompanied by Cheo singers—an ancient form of Northern Vietnamese opera—who narrate the stories through song.

I attended the Thang Long Water Puppet Show on my second night in Hanoi, and it turned out to be a great decision after a long day of walking around the Old Quarter. The puppets, live music and storytelling were fascinating, and I was genuinely impressed by how smoothly everything moved on the water. The English audio guide helped me follow the stories much better. My only frustration was people filming with their phones, which broke the immersion a bit. Still, a memorable cultural experience.
Aarav (India)
I wasn’t sure what to expect, as I had never seen a water puppet show before, but I ended up enjoying it a lot. The performance was colorful, lighthearted and surprisingly funny in parts. We chose seats near the front, which made a big difference. I did find the constant phone screens in front of me a little distracting, but overall it was well worth the time and money.
Priya (India)
We went to the show after dinner near Hoan Kiem Lake, and it fit perfectly into our evening. The skill of the puppeteers is incredible, especially considering they perform hidden behind the screen. There are some pyrotechnics early in the show, and the smoke lingered longer than I expected, so it’s worth knowing in advance. Despite that, I’d still recommend this as a must-see cultural activity in Hanoi.
Rohan (India)
This was my first time seeing traditional Vietnamese water puppetry, and I found it charming and relaxing. The music and singing created a lovely atmosphere, and I enjoyed watching the small details in each scene. We booked tickets earlier in the day, which I’m glad we did because the show was full. It’s a short performance, but it leaves a lasting impression.
Aisha (UAE)
I visited the theatre with my family, and even my children stayed engaged throughout the show. The stories were easy to follow with the audio translation headset, and the performers were clearly very talented. I did have to ask the person in front of me to lower their phone, which was a bit awkward, but aside from that, it was an enjoyable and unique experience for all of us.
Omar (Qatar)
I chose this show as a way to learn more about Vietnamese culture, and it exceeded my expectations. The colorful puppets and traditional music felt authentic and heartfelt. Sitting closer to the stage allowed me to appreciate the expressions and movements better. I left the theatre smiling and feeling like I had experienced something truly local.
Fatima (Saudi Arabia)
I’ve seen many cultural shows while travelling, but this one really stood out. The water puppets were far more expressive than I imagined, and the live musicians added a lot of energy to the performance. The theatre is small, so it feels quite intimate. The only downside was audience members recording videos, but it didn’t completely ruin what was otherwise a fantastic show.
James (UK)
I went in with no real expectations and came out pleasantly surprised. The show was visually beautiful and easy to enjoy even without understanding Vietnamese. The English audio guide helped connect the scenes into meaningful stories. I especially liked when the puppeteers came out at the end-it made me appreciate the effort behind the performance even more.
Ivanka (USA)
After hearing about water puppetry from a friend, I decided to see the show for myself, and I’m glad I did. The combination of water, music and movement is something I’ve never experienced before. The best advice I can give is to sit as close as possible for a clear view. A few distractions from the audience aside, it’s an excellent cultural experience.

I joined this show after a long day exploring Hanoi, not expecting too much, but it completely surprised me. Sitting by the lake in the evening breeze, watching farmers perform scenes of daily life on water reminded me of my grandparents’ village in India. The spiritual moments felt calm and grounding, and I left feeling peaceful rather than just entertained.

Amit Sharma (India)

I am someone who usually gets tired of long shows, but this one kept my attention the whole time. I loved noticing small details like the way performers moved in the water and how the music slowly built the emotions. It felt personal, warm, and very human.

Mehta (India)

As a photographer, I was constantly tempted to take pictures, but I found myself just watching instead. The reflections of light on the water and the traditional costumes were stunning. Even without understanding Vietnamese, I could clearly feel the story.

Rahul Verma (India)

I travel often for work, and cultural shows sometimes feel repetitive, but this experience was different. The open-air setting, cool night air, and live music created a very relaxing atmosphere. I felt fully present and disconnected from my phone for once.

Omar (UAE)

I came with my family, and we were all impressed in different ways. My mother loved the village scenes, while I enjoyed the music and lighting. We talked about the show all the way back to the hotel, which rarely happens after a tour activity.

Haddad (Qatar)

What stayed with me most was the simplicity of the stories. There was no need for explanation, yet everything was easy to understand. Watching real villagers perform made me respect the effort and pride they have in their culture.

Rashid (Saudi Arabia)

I wasn’t sure if an outdoor show would be comfortable, but the setting was perfect. Sitting under the night sky with the sound of water and traditional instruments felt very immersive. It was one of those experiences you remember long after the trip.

Wilson (UK)

I booked this tour on a recommendation and it ended up being one of my favorite nights in Vietnam. The show felt slow in a good way, allowing me to absorb each scene. It was emotional without trying too hard.
Carter (USA)
I appreciate art that feels honest, and this show delivered that. You can tell the performers truly live the stories they are showing. I left with a strong sense of connection to Northern Vietnam and its people.

I almost skipped this show because I thought it would be too traditional for me. I was wrong. Sitting there at night with the cool breeze and watching the stage slowly light up was unforgettable. The fishing village scenes reminded me of coastal towns in India. I did not expect to feel that connection, and that made the experience very personal.

Rohit (India)

What impressed me most was not the technology, but the calm moments. The scenes about daily life felt slow, gentle, and beautiful. I could hear water moving and music blending naturally. After a busy travel schedule, this show helped me relax. I left feeling peaceful, not overwhelmed, which is rare for large scale performances.

Neha (India)

I am usually focused on visuals, but the sound design stayed with me long after the show ended. The drums were powerful without being too loud, and the traditional music felt emotional. I remember closing my eyes for a moment just to listen. It felt like Vietnam was telling its story directly to me.

Kunal (India)

I attended the show alone, and that made the experience even stronger. Without distractions, I focused on every movement and light change. I liked how the story was told without many words. It allowed me to interpret it in my own way. It felt respectful and artistic rather than touristy.

Faisal (Jordan)

I travel a lot and often see similar cultural shows, but this one felt more sincere. The performers did not rush. You could see effort and emotion in small gestures. One quiet scene about family life touched me unexpectedly. I thought about my own family back home while watching it.

Mariam (Qatar)

What stayed with me was the sense of scale. From my seat, the stage felt endless. Water, people, lights, all moving together smoothly. At one point, I forgot I was watching a performance and felt like I was inside the story. That feeling is rare and very powerful.

Yousef (Saudi Arabia)

I love art and storytelling, and this show felt like a living painting. The transitions between scenes were slow and elegant. I appreciated that it did not try to explain everything. It trusted the audience to feel and understand. That approach made it more artistic and less commercial.

Clara (France)

I went to the show without reading anything about it first, which was the best choice. Every scene surprised me. The festival chapter felt joyful and full of energy, but my favorite part was actually the quiet beginning. It set the mood perfectly. I would gladly watch it again from a different seat.

Luca (Germany)

I am very critical of large productions, but this one felt well balanced. Technology supported the story instead of dominating it. I noticed how carefully the lighting followed the music. Nothing felt random. It showed strong direction and respect for cultural details, which I truly appreciated.

I visited Phare Circus with my wife during our honeymoon in Siem Reap, and it was one of the most memorable nights of our trip. The energy of the performers was incredible, and the storytelling touched us deeply even without words. I loved how the show reflected real Cambodian life. Knowing that our ticket supported local education made the experience even more meaningful.

Rahul (India)

I went with my parents, and finding something we all enjoy is not easy. My father loved the live music, my mother focused on the costumes, and I was impressed by the acting. The show kept our attention without feeling loud or chaotic. We talked about it again the next day, which says a lot.

Neha (India)

I expected acrobatics, but I did not expect humor and sadness in the same performance. At one point the audience laughed, and minutes later the atmosphere became very quiet. That contrast made the show powerful. I respected how the artists used their bodies to communicate serious ideas without speaking.

Khalid (India)

What I liked most was the feeling of connection between the performers and the audience. They looked confident but also very human. I sat near the front and could see their expressions clearly. It felt personal, not distant like many large shows. The evening felt calm yet emotionally strong.

Mariam (Oman)

The story reminded me of social issues we also face at home, which made it easy to relate. I appreciated that the show did not try to be overly dramatic. It felt honest and balanced. I left feeling thoughtful rather than overwhelmed, which is not something I often feel after a performance.

El Sayed (Qatar)

I have seen many performances in Europe, but this one felt raw in a good way. The movements were not polished for perfection but for meaning. I enjoyed watching the musicians on stage reacting to the action. It felt alive and spontaneous, which made the experience feel authentic.

Clara (France)

I chose Phare Circus because I wanted to support something local, not just be a tourist. During the show, I forgot about that reason and was simply absorbed in the performance. The pacing was good, and I never checked my phone. For me, that is the sign of a strong show.

Jonas (Switzerland)

I am very sensitive to noise and crowds, so I was a bit nervous. Surprisingly, I felt comfortable the entire time. The open air venue helped, and the performance flowed naturally. I found myself smiling without realizing it. It was emotional but gentle.

Isabella (Italy)

I went without reading any reviews beforehand, which I now think was a good idea. The show unfolded naturally, and I did not try to analyze it too much. Some moments were confusing, but that made me think more afterward. It felt like art rather than a product made only for tourists.
