Water Puppet Show

Water puppetry dates back to the 11th century and originated in villages of the Red River Delta in Northern Vietnam. During seasonal flooding, villagers created this art form to entertain one another in submerged rice fields.

The wooden puppets are carefully carved and lacquered, then performed in a waist-deep water pool. Puppeteers, hidden behind a bamboo screen, manipulate the puppets using long bamboo rods beneath the water’s surface.

Each performance is selected from a repertoire of over 400 traditional folk stories. Live music is provided by a traditional Vietnamese orchestra, accompanied by Cheo singers—an ancient form of Northern Vietnamese opera—who narrate the stories through song.

I attended the Thang Long Water Puppet Show on my second night in Hanoi, and it turned out to be a great decision after a long day of walking around the Old Quarter. Phare The Cambodian Circus is one of the most exciting and meaningful evening experiences in Siem Reap. More than a traditional circus, Phare is a high energy cultural performance that blends acrobatics, theater, live music, and contemporary dance to tell powerful Cambodian stories. The shows are entertaining, emotional, and suitable for families, couples, and groups seeking nightlife beyond Pub Street.

All performers are students and graduates of Phare Ponleu Selpak, a non profit arts school founded in 1994 in Battambang to support disadvantaged youth through education and the arts. By attending Phare Circus, visitors directly support this social enterprise, helping artists earn a fair income while funding free education and community outreach programs.

After a day exploring Angkor Wat, Phare Circus is the perfect way to relax, be inspired, and connect with modern Cambodian culture while making a positive impact.
